A quick guide to using GPS navigation.
If you are interested in using GPS, but are not familiar with it, you're probably wondering where to start. You are probably wondering which system is best to use, and how to use it. In this article I will show the best ways of properly using your GPS unit.
When researching which GPS unit you want to use, you want one which offers the best features for hiking or camping combined with simplicity. Handheld GPS systems are more than just trendy gadgets. They are a state of the art system which allows people to find the location of many different places, and avoid getting lost.
Before GPS, you had to understand how to read a map in order to know where you were going, and how to get there. Hikers and campers would often get lost, and if they were injured, and could not contact anyone, they would often die. Even today you want to keep a paper map handy in case you damage your GPS unit. Different GPS systems have different functions they will offer you. Some offer more tools than others.
If you are hiking through the woods, you want a GPS unit which will be able to find your exact location using latitude and longitude even in dark environments where you have no idea where you are. You can also determine the distance from your location to the next important point.
Some GPS tools will allow you to mark the location of your car, so that you will be able to find its location at a later time. If you are mountain climbing, you can mark initial location and track yourself as you move up the mountain and your elevation increases. GPS units allow you to back track and follow your initial steps so that you can get back to any location you need.
You can also use a compass as an additional tool to assist your GPS navigation unit. Despite all the advantages of GPS, they do not work well in buildings or under the cover of dense trees. It is still important to carry a map and compass, in case you have problems with the GPS unit. Another problem with GPS is batteries. They use up batteries very quickly.
Understanding the benefits of GPS is easy. But effectively using them and maximizing their capabilities can be quite challenging. However, for the few disadvantages GPS systems have, they have become an indispensable tool for navigation.
